International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations

Message from ISCSC President Lynn Rhodes

• Papers published in our peer reviewed journal Comparative Civilizations Review (CCR) had 7,617 full-text downloads in the month of October alone! Each month the statistics are updated on the ISCSC website under the “Digital Commons” link on the homepage. Global exposure to the CCR grows each day and the numbers of people viewing publications alone is an incentive to membership in the ISCSC.

• New social media platforms are being upgraded or developed. In addition to our website, we will be launching social media presence and communications on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn. Pierre Dimaculangan, one of our early, young scholars began our first Facebook page a number of years ago. Pierre has transitioned the management of the Facebook page to new ISCSC member Bibi Pelic. Some of you may recall Bibi from our conference in Bucharest. Bibi has been named as our new ISCSC Director of Communications for social media platforms and she will be diligently working to increase our online presence. Welcome Bibi!

• Generous donations have been gifted to the ISCSC this year. These have been in the form of monetary donations; a generous bequest from the Minna Hewes estate; two vehicles (from which we receive the proceeds); and individual purchases made via AmazonSmile which benefit the ISCSC. Donation resources are listed prominently on the ISCSC website home page.

• A letter from the ISCSC was delivered to Professor Shunji Hosaka, President of the Japan Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations (JSCSC) in honor of their recent 39th conference and in recognition of our long partnership with the JSCSC. A special recognition was given to Professor Shuntaro Ito who was an early president for the ISCSC and helped to build the bridge between the JSCSC and ISCSC.

• A joint Resolution between the JSCSC and ISCSC was signed by JSCSC President Hosaka and ISCSC President Rhodes.

• New Members: We are pleased to report quite a few new members including several new Lifetime Members have joined the ISCSC this year!

• 2022 ISCSC Conference will be held at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, thanks to long-time ISCSC member, Professor, Mary Tepfenhart! Mary has previously hosted our conference at Monmouth University, and she is looking forward to hosting us again in 2022. Additional details (dates, times, lodging, registration, call-for-papers, theme etc.) will be announced when finalized.

REQUESTS:

• Of course, social media platforms require content. If you have photos, videos (such as your video from the conference or another venue), or narratives you would like to share on any of these soon-to-be- released platforms, PLEASE send them to Director of Communications, Bibi Pelic, at <commdirector@iscsc.org>. When sharing, photos or other media, please provide a brief description for context and advise Bibi that they are being provided with your specific permission. We are requesting content!

• BOOK REVIEWS: ISCSC book review editor, Professor David Wilkinson is requesting book selections (from his list) and reviews. He will send the selected books to you for your review. You get to keep the book for taking the time to send him your thoughtful book review and perhaps consider presenting your book review at the next conference and/or sending it to be considered for publication in the CCR. Attached to this email you will find Professor Wilkinson’s list of available books and description of how to submit your review. His email address is dow@ucla.edu. You will find a sneak peak of our soon-to-be-released new ISCSC logo on the book review list.

Happy Holidays to everyone and be well,

Lynn Rhodes, President
